What is NDT? (Non-Destructive Testing)

NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) refers to a group of inspection and testing methods used to evaluate the integrity and quality of materials, components, or structures without causing any damage to the tested part. These techniques allow inspectors to detect defects such as cracks, voids, porosity, inclusions, or welding imperfections on the surface or inside the material.

One of the main advantages of non-destructive testing is that the inspected component remains fully usable after the inspection. Unlike destructive testing methods, NDT does not require cutting, breaking, or altering the part. This allows manufacturers and operators to verify product quality while keeping the component in service.
NDT methods are widely used in industries where safety, reliability, and quality control are critical, including aerospace, defense, steel production, automotive manufacturing, railway systems, energy, oil and gas, and general manufacturing industries. These inspections play an important role both during production processes and in maintenance or service inspections.
The most commonly used non-destructive testing methods include:
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT) – Uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal defects within materials.
  • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) – Detects surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials.
  • Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) – Reveals surface-breaking defects using penetrant liquids.
  • Radiographic Testing (RT) – Uses X-rays or gamma rays to inspect the internal structure of components.
  • Eddy Current Testing (ET) – Uses electromagnetic principles to detect surface and near-surface defects in conductive materials.
  • Visual Testing (VT) – The basic inspection method performed directly by the human eye or with optical instruments.
NEXSEN provides engineering solutions and equipment for industrial inspection and quality control applications. By developing customized NDT systems, inspection equipment, and industrial testing solutions, NEXSEN helps companies improve reliability, safety, and efficiency in their production processes.
Today, non-destructive testing has become an essential part of modern industrial quality assurance systems, ensuring safe operation and consistent product quality.
