What is a Penetrant Inspection Booth? UV-A Inspection & Dark Room Systems

NEXSEN penetrant inspection cabinets are designed and manufactured using a custom engineering approach based on specific customer requirements and application needs. During the design phase, parameters such as part geometry, dimensions, inspection method (visible or fluorescent penetrant), inspection environment, and operator ergonomics are carefully evaluated to determine the most suitable inspection solution.

NEXSEN penetrant inspection cabinets provide a controlled inspection environment to ensure reliable and repeatable penetrant testing operations. The cabinets are designed to provide proper UV-A illumination, controlled ambient lighting conditions, and operator safety, enabling accurate detection of surface-breaking discontinuities.

These cabinets are primarily used for fluorescent penetrant inspection under UV-A light and can be configured according to customer requirements. Standard configurations may include the following components:
  • UV-A inspection lamps (365 nm)
  • Controlled low-level white light environment
  • Integrated inspection workspace
  • Ventilation system for operator safety
  • Chemical-resistant internal surfaces
  • Ergonomic inspection design
  • Optional turntables or part positioning fixtures
  • Integrated overhead hoist system
The integrated overhead hoist system is designed to safely handle heavy or large components during inspection. This system allows operators to easily position parts inside the cabinet and maintain proper orientation during the inspection process. The hoist system can be configured with manual or electric lifting mechanisms and can be designed for different load capacities depending on the application requirements.
The cabinet structure is manufactured using industrial-grade materials resistant to penetrant chemicals, ensuring durability and long-term operation in demanding industrial environments. Interior surfaces are optimized to minimize light reflections and improve inspection visibility.
To ensure reliable inspection performance, the following technical parameters are considered during cabinet design:
  • UV-A light intensity and uniformity (µW/cm²)
  • Ambient white light level control (lux)
  • UV wavelength (365 nm)
  • Operator visibility and ergonomics
  • Ventilation and environmental control
NEXSEN penetrant inspection cabinets can be designed in accordance with the following international standards:
  • ISO 3452 – Non-destructive testing — Penetrant testing
  • ASTM E165 / E165M – Liquid Penetrant Examination
  • ASTM E1417 / E1417M – Liquid Penetrant Testing
  • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section V – Article 6
  • AMS 2644 – Penetrant inspection materials
  • ISO 3059 – Lighting requirements for NDT
NEXSEN penetrant inspection cabinets provide a reliable and controlled inspection environment for detecting surface defects such as cracks, porosity, laps, and other surface discontinuities in industries including aerospace, defense, automotive, casting, railway systems, and general manufacturing.
